FTW: Convert images to QR codes for Animal Crossing: New Leaf

In past iterations of Animal Crossing, quality custom designs were a hot commodity. You could use them for shirts, hats, flags, wallpaper, and more, but making them well required meticulously coloring each pixel. Furthermore, sharing patterns required that you connect with the friend and give them the pattern. Thankfully, New Leaf now allows you to share patterns by QR code. Even better, by reverse engineering the code, there's already been an iOS app made that can convert images to Animal Crossing designs and can generate a corresponding QR code so that all you have to do is scan it.

The app is free, so check it out: QR MyDesign Assistant for Animal Crossing 3DS by Bochen Technology co. Ltd.

If you know of any other programs for PC or online that do the same thing, let me know! And feel free to leave any QR codes you've generated using this app in the comments. Here are the ones that I've made.

Update: An online app for making designs that's in Japanese. (Doesn't do QR codes.) (Link)
Update: Another one similar to the Japanese web-based app above, but in English. (Link)
Update: An Android version. (Link)
Update: An English downloadable version for PC is now available and in development. (Download (v.0.4 7/9/13), On Reddit)
Update: Another web-based app, but this one can generate QR codes. (Link)
Update: A web-based app that was submitted in the comments. Thanks, Jason W.! (Link)

  1. How do you download the third one to your PC? The "English downloadable version for PC" one? I hit the tab that said "Zip" with an arrow pointing down but I see nothing in the folders that are something to install like a program of some sort.

    1. You're right, that seems to be just the source. You should be able to download it here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/a4hapxgb3hxh9ow/Version_0.2.zip

I updated the post and will try to get a link that always points to the most up to date version. Thanks for letting me know about that.

    2. So, that is the full working version of the software itself? Just making sure since I'm typing on a Wii U right now so I can't download it right this second.

  2. Sorry for all these questions, but I have a question about how to use the software itself. When I downloaded the ZIP file, I ran the application entitled AnimalCrossingQR, and inside of the same zipped folder were files entitled Newtonsoft.Json.dll and zxing.dll. When I ran the application, it looked like this: http://oi42.tinypic.com/2zeilb9.jpg However, I was more under the impression that it would be an application where you upload a picture to the application and then it generates it into a QR Code. I kind of feel dumb here, but how does this program work? I don't see any such conversion tools on the interface. Do I have to do something with the files from the "Source" link or something? I'm just really confused to as how this whole thing works.

    1. If you click "File" in the top left you can create a pattern from an image. I didn't see it at first either.

  3. Okay, so I'm having a bit of trouble figuring this out. I'm trying to get the app to open up a customized QR Code of mine that I created straight in the game so that I can get my Unique ID so any designs I make using the app will be considered mine in the game, but it's not letting me. I keep getting an error saying "This type of pattern is not currently not supported." How in the world do you open up a QR Code using the app? I've tried everything. I've tried saving my QR code image from my 3DS into MS Paint (like here: http://oi43.tinypic.com/dcsdw0.jpg), I've tried cropping the QR Code itself (even though I'm not quite sure how much to crop it) and saving it in MS Paint, and still nothing. Can you please tell me how to get the app to open up my QR Code?

    1. I'm pretty sure the problem is that that program doesn't support Pro Designs yet. If you use a simple pattern that you design in your inventory, it should be able to get your ID from it. You can just use the screenshot the game generates in that case.

Hopefully it'll be updated to work with Pro designs soon.

  4. So I just tried downloading the pc program for qrs and my antivirus blocked the download as malicious. What's up with that?

    1. I don't know what's up with that. Avira didn't find anything with a scan and I haven't had any adverse effects from using it. What is your antivirus software? (Not that I'll be able to help you even if I know)

  5. the Web based one is the best so far :)

  6. The web based one does have a lot of features. I created another web based tool that's simpler at http://acqrfactory.com.

  7. The pc program is pretty useless. You can't even upload your own qr codes to get you unique id to actually use anything you want to make because it crashes every time you try

  8. Is there one that lets you make face cut outs as well?

  9. What is unique ID and how do you generate it so that you can be the 'owner' of a QR code that you created?

    1. To generate it, you'll have to load the QR code of a legitimate pattern you made in game. You can do this by clicking File (it's above the colors, easy to miss) -> Open Pattern -> From QR Code. Then you can set that ID as default. I'm assuming you're using the fourth program on the list of updates.

    2. Thanks for your help! The only problem is, I wanted to use my designs on a face-cut-out standee, but it doesn't work! But it does work on the custom-design signs, though. I would like to be able to put my designs on my face-cut-out standee.

    3. Unfortunately, the person who made the app never made it compatible with the face cut-out standees. :( I don't know of a program that can do that and I don't know how to make such a program myself. Sorry.

    4. Oh, that's a shame. But at least I can put my designs on my custom- design signs.
